Presentation of the semi - annual report on the freedom of expression in Burundi.
League Iteka has presented on the 13th November 07 its semi -annaul report on the freedom of expression in Burundi thanks to the project of Ligue Iteka ‘’the promotion of the freedom of expression in Burundi’’ funded by European Union through the NGO Search for common ground and executed by League ITEKA jointly with radio ISANGANIRO and Search. The presentation was followed by a workshop on the issue of the freedom of expression in Burundi.
In his opening speech, the vice executive secretary in charge of information in League Iteka, who represented the president of Ligue Iteka organization, has said that freedom of expression is one of the public freedom which is recognized to everyone and which should be protected. However its violation goes back far in the history of Burundi and is still violated today at different levels
During the first semester of 2007, Ligue iteka has reported 73 cases of violation among which 37 cases of violation of freedom of opinion et expression, 18 cases of violation of the right of meeting and association, 14 cases of the violation of freedom press and 4 cases of violation of religious freedom.
